Downfall of IT Books

[Knowledge Wins It All]

If memory serves, the years between 1995 to 2005 was a golden age for IT books. I remember feeling the joy just by browsing those books in the bookstores – let it be Borders, MPH or Popular Bookstores. After that period, IT books, and also engineering books, started to disappear from the shelves.

It didn’t just happened here in Malaysia, but worldwide. I was in USA, or exactly in Orange County, California, and I witnessed the same phenomena. It was only a half year time from early Fall 2008 to early Spring 2009. There was a shopping mall called G-Orange, around which you can find Borders bookstore. At the beginning of my staying there, I saw an abundance of IT books, then towards the end, I saw the shelves was shrinking. And too bad I think even that Borders itself closed down.

Not only to technical books, this also happened, and is happening to other types of printed media like magazines and newspapers. I saw this happened to my favorite humour magazine – Gila-Gila. Even my favorite new paper, Utusan Malaysia, reported of lost.

Why did this happen? The immediate reason is obvious to even a novice IT people. It is due to the fact that there are so many PDF format e-book nowadays. And many of those are free. With the digital book who needs physically printed books? Ironically enough, PDF e-book was invented by IT people. So IT people were responsible for the disappearance of IT books.

Specifically for IT books, there is another reason. There are many books on specific versions of software. For example books on Microsoft Excel 2013. When there is a new version of Microsoft Excel released, do you think people still need the book on version 2013? And do you think the books on version 2013 will be sold out by the time the new version was released? Publishing books on specific expiring products like this is so bad an idea.

Perhaps in a few decades these books will be in museum.

Nibiru is coming - Anyone?

[Knowledge Wins It All]

A decent Internet user would realize that the are of information explosion does not bring knowledge let alone wisdom to mankind. What comes to mankind with media social in this era is not all righteous knowledge but many false ones especially those who bring something claiming we have been cheated - this is what we call conspiracy theory.

It started, may be with the theory of fake-up moon landing, then followed by many more - flat earth, anti-vaccine, and in this post I would to highlight this one: Nibiru Hoax.

This is a bunch of people who believe in the end of world - close enough to Islamic belief, but - by a collision with a dark planet they call Nibiru or Planet X. There are sorts of claims they made like, this planet is invisible to NASA's radar, or NASA already knew about this but they keep quiet.

But the top and latest idiocy was their prediction of Nibiru impact on September 23rd 2017. You can't have enough laugh reading what these people say in the Internet.

Attempting to make their claim legit, they even have the concept a solar system to which Nibiru belongs to. The central star in that solar system, of course a dark star too - what do you expect?

New MRT First Ride

[Awesome Lonesome: A Traveling Journal of A Loner]

I didn't want to miss the history in the making today so I took a ride home from MJII, Beranang by the new MRT. I left my car at MJII, and as an introvert, I took this first ride alone.

A view and selfie at Kajang Stadium MRT as dusk.

Stopped at Maluri for connecting Putra Heights Height line to Puchong and solat:

A majestic view of Sunway Velocity and Petronas Twin Tower from the station:

At Maluri LRT.

And finally at home at IOI Puchong LRT.

UMNO Open House July 16th, 2017

[Awesome Lonesome: A Traveling Journal of A Loner]

I was late to the event (as always). At about 2:20pm, just 40 minutes before the supposedly end time of the event, people were still pouring in, but, of course the food were finishing. They were serving food stalls presented by different states.

So what did I eat? At the end of the event mutton were still abundant:

Other than that, I didn’t know what recipe I ate. I just found some plain rice, nasi dagang or nasi lemak from different stalls, fish or meat from others, then mixed them. I was making my own dish out of whatever left – just the others who were late.

But the consolation prize was, I was able to take selfie with cardboards of VVIPs. Unlike my last year visit to Sri Perdana. Hooo hoooo...

I Really Need to do Something About My Writing

[Awesome Lonesome: A Traveling Journal of A Loner]

I have abandoned this blog for so long. As an academic I should be writing but I’m not doing my job. So I should not blame others if I’m not so successful as an academic.

Recollecting the time when I was so into writing. It was early 2000s. I was writing a lot to counter argue those bughah people. But then I was not so successful either. Perhaps because I let my writing when everywhere scattering. So I could not make it a success.

I need to write – in both human and computer languages – and now I intend to make money from them. Pray I can fulfill this.

The PM Najib already blown his whistle for the government cyber troopers to start offensive fights. Where am I? At least if I cannot make money from my writings, I should write for a fight.
